On Vacation: Hoopoe

In this entry, the hoopoe with the lovely gawkiness of a young teenage girl: a 17th-century Turkish plate, the hoopoe that was my neighbor in Athens, and an early 15th-century drawing by Pisanello.

  1. Enjoy your vacation! And maybe this upupa would fit nicely:

  2. Upupa. That's hilarious! How should I pronounce it?

  3. ἔποψ (Classical Greek) is rather nice, too.

  4. L'oo:poopa, I think it is kind of onomatopoeic as there's a little resemblance in the English, Italian and Greek (also demotic Greek) expressions. The German word is earthbound: der Wiedehopf (vee:dehopf)

    Henze's opera is wonderful.
